The "movement to donate food" spreads across Berlin

2009.05.20 Hideko Kawachi

Every day tons and tons of food go to waste. "Berliner Tafel" is an NPO that collects foods that would otherwise be thrown away and distribute them to people in need. Every month 550 tons of food are collected from large food factories, supermarkets and hotels, sorted, and donated to 45,000 people at 45 locations around the city. People whose monthly income is below 900 Euros (approximately 120,000 yen) are eligible for such aid, but due to the worsening economy, demand for such food donation is increasing. That is why Berliner Tafel has begun a new movement.

This movement known as "buy one more!" asks shoppers to purchase one more food item at supermarkets, and to hand them to the Berliner Tafel staff waiting at the entrance. This was conducted at 50 locations within the city of Berlin during Easter, and resulted in more than 15 tons of food donations. Because this event was so successful, they have decided to continue with such activities around the city in May as well. And during the "BIG 25," the Berlin marathon held on May 10, the campaign ???1 bread for 1 kilo??? was launched with the support of a large bread maker, Kamps GmbH. The bread company donated 1 bread for each kilometer the preregistered runners covered during the marathon, which resulted in a donation of 20,000 pieces of bread.
